What kinds of lodging are near Capitol Reef?

There are broadly five options. Inside the park itself there is a campground at Fruita and backcountry camping — no hotel rooms. Torrey, Utah, a few minutes from the western entrance, holds most of the area's hotels and motels, from chains to independents. Beyond those there are vacation rentals scattered through the valley, a handful of guest ranches and inns in the surrounding communities, and glamping — domes, yurts and cabins — on the open land between the towns and the cliffs. We are in that last category, in Teasdale, Utah.

Should you stay in Torrey or somewhere else?

Torrey, Utah is the practical base for most visitors: it is the closest town to the western entrance and has the restaurants and fuel. Staying further out trades convenience for quiet and for darker sky — the further you get from any town's lighting, the more you see at night. If you are here for the park in daylight and want dinner within walking distance, stay in town. If the night sky is a reason you are coming, it is worth being outside it.

When should you book?

Autumn is the busiest stretch in Capitol Reef Country, and the shoulder either side of it fills quickly too. Rooms in the area get scarce well before the season itself. Winter is the quietest time and, for sky quality, arguably the best — the nights are longest and the air is driest — but much of the local lodging closes for it, so check dates rather than assuming availability.
