The Twin Falls area punches above its weight for outdoor recreation. The Snake River Canyon provides the dramatic backdrop, but there's variety in every direction — from high desert hikes to alpine skiing just 90 minutes away.
In This Guide
Spring & Summer
Shoshone Falls — Visit during peak flow (April-June) when snowmelt turns the falls into a roaring spectacle. The park has walking trails and a picnic area. Small entry fee per vehicle.
Snake River Kayaking & Fishing — The river below the canyon offers excellent kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and trout fishing. Several local outfitters offer guided trips and rentals.
Dierkes Lake — A swimming and cliff-jumping spot right next to Shoshone Falls. Local favorite on hot summer days.
Canyon Rim Trail — Paved and unpaved sections along the Snake River Canyon rim with views that don't quit. Great for walking, running, or cycling.
Thousand Springs — Drive the Thousand Springs Scenic Route between Twin Falls and Hagerman to see waterfalls emerging from canyon walls. Ritter Island and Niagara Springs are worth the stops.
Fall
The Magic Valley in fall is golden light and quiet — tourist crowds thin out but the weather stays comfortable through October. It's the best time for:
- Canyon rim hikes without the summer heat
- Photography at Shoshone Falls with autumn colors
- Exploring Balanced Rock and Pillar Falls with fewer visitors
- Harvest season farm visits and local produce
Winter
Sun Valley — Just 90 minutes north, one of the premier ski resorts in the country. Bald Mountain offers 3,400 feet of vertical and genuinely uncrowded runs compared to Colorado resorts.
Cross-Country Skiing — Several groomed trail systems in the area, including options near Ketchum/Sun Valley.
Winter Canyon Views — The Snake River Canyon with snow is a different kind of beautiful. Fewer visitors means you'll often have overlooks to yourself.
Year-Round
Perrine Bridge BASE Jumping — Legal year-round without a permit. Even if you're watching, it's a spectacle. Best viewing from the pedestrian walkway on the bridge.
Golf — Several courses in the area with canyon views.
Hot Springs — Banbury Hot Springs and Miracle Hot Springs are both within 30 minutes, offering natural geothermal soaking options.
