How Scandinavian Design Principles Enhance Wellness Travel

Explore how Nordic design philosophy - minimalism, natural materials, and connection to nature - creates spaces that genuinely support rest and restoration.

There's a reason Scandinavian design has endured while other trends have faded. Beyond aesthetic appeal, Nordic design principles are rooted in something deeper—a philosophy of living that prioritizes wellbeing over appearance.

As we designed LuxeDen Resorts' geodesic glamping domes, we studied what makes Scandinavian spaces feel so restorative. Here's what we learned.

The Philosophy of "Lagom"

The Swedish concept of "lagom" roughly translates to "just the right amount"—not too much, not too little. It's a rejection of excess in favor of balance.

In design, lagom means:

  • Every item serves a purpose
  • Quality over quantity
  • Comfort without ostentation
  • Beauty in simplicity

This philosophy directly opposes the "more is more" approach of many luxury properties. Instead of overwhelming guests with amenities they won't use, lagom suggests providing exactly what's needed for genuine comfort—nothing more, nothing less.

Natural Materials, Natural Calm

Walk into a Scandinavian-designed space and you'll notice the materials: warm wood, natural stone, wool textiles, plants. These aren't decorative choices—they're functional ones.

Wood

Wood has been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce stress. The presence of natural wood in interior spaces creates a subconscious connection to nature, even when you're indoors.

Nordic builders have used wood for centuries not just because of availability, but because they understood intuitively what science now confirms: wooden environments support human wellbeing.

Natural Light

Scandinavian winters mean months of limited daylight. This scarcity has made Nordic cultures experts in maximizing natural light. Large windows, reflective surfaces, and light color palettes all serve to amplify whatever sunlight is available.

For wellness, natural light is essential. It regulates circadian rhythms, improves mood, and supports healthy sleep patterns. Scandinavian design prioritizes light above almost everything else.

Textural Contrast

Touch matters more than we realize. The contrast between smooth wood floors and soft wool rugs, between cool stone and warm textiles, engages our senses in subtle but meaningful ways.

This attention to texture creates spaces that feel alive and comfortable rather than cold or sterile.

The Concept of "Hygge"

Denmark's famous "hygge" (roughly: cozy contentment) isn't about any specific design element—it's about the feeling a space creates. Hygge is candlelight and soft blankets, warm drinks and good conversation, the quiet pleasure of being comfortable.

Designing for hygge means considering:

  • Lighting: Warm, dimmable, often candlelit
  • Seating: Comfortable enough for hours, arranged for conversation
  • Temperature: Warm without being stuffy
  • Sound: Quiet enough for reflection

These considerations shape everything from furniture selection to window placement to heating systems.

Minimalism with Warmth

The Scandinavian approach to minimalism differs from its more austere interpretations. Nordic minimalism isn't about having nothing—it's about having only things that matter.

The result is spaces that feel calm without feeling empty. There's room to breathe, think, and rest. Clutter doesn't compete for attention. The mind can settle.

This is particularly important for wellness travel. Guests arrive carrying the mental clutter of daily life. Spaces that add more stimulation make it harder to decompress. Spaces that subtract distraction make it easier.

Connection to Nature

Perhaps the most important principle: Scandinavian design blurs the boundary between inside and outside. Large windows frame natural views. Materials echo the outdoor environment. Indoor plants bring nature inside.

This isn't decoration—it's based on the understanding that humans evolved in nature and thrive with continued connection to it. The biophilia hypothesis suggests we have an innate need to be near living systems and natural environments.

Scandinavian design honors this need, creating spaces that feel like extensions of the landscape rather than shelters from it.

Applying Nordic Principles

At LuxeDen Resorts, we're applying these principles to our glamping domes in Lava Hot Springs:

Materials: Local wood, natural stone, wool and linen textiles sourced from Nordic producers

Windows: The geodesic dome structure allows panoramic glazing that frames mountain views and Idaho sky, maximizing natural light in ways a flat wall never could

Color palette: Warm neutrals drawn from the surrounding landscape — forest greens, stone grays, warm wood tones

Furnishings: Carefully selected pieces that prioritize comfort and durability over trends

Space: The dome's curved geometry creates generous, flowing proportions that feel embracing rather than boxy — just right (lagom)

Light: Layered lighting with dimmers throughout, fireplace in each dome

Beyond Aesthetics

Scandinavian design isn't about achieving a certain look—it's about creating spaces that support human flourishing. The visual simplicity is a side effect of prioritizing function, comfort, and connection to nature.

For wellness travel, this approach makes sense. Guests don't need instagram-worthy details. They need spaces that help them sleep well, think clearly, and feel at peace.

We believe the landscape of southeast Idaho and the design traditions of Scandinavia share something essential: a respect for nature, a preference for authenticity, and an understanding that less can be more. Our geodesic domes in Lava Hot Springs bring these traditions together.
